Fic: The Other Side of the River [SPOILERS FOR MIRACLE DAY]

Week: Week Ending Sunday 22 May
Author: azn_jack_fiend
Title: The Other Side of the River
Author Warnings/Spoilers/Contains Note: I wouldn't suggest reading this fic unless you're a Miracle Day spoiler fiend and have seen material like the latest trailer. I have some specific notes about spoilers in a second A/N under the cut.
Rating: R
Character/Pairings: Jack/Rex
Summary: Jack and Rex have a history together, of sorts.
Rec: This fic is great because it's a fantastic look at Jack post-COE with gorgeous descriptions and interesting explanation of currents events. His characterisation is wonderful here - strong, flirty, but with a fragile, brittle edge. The author warns that this will probably be jossed once the new series airs, but I really liked the idea behind why Rex is still alive after his injury and what will happen once time sorts itself out. Rex has a strong voice as well, and is an interesting and well put together (at this point, because we have no canon characterisation yet) OC.

Rec: Manifest, with Tea

Week: Week Ending Sunday 22 May
Author: analineblue
Title: Manifest, with Tea
Author Warnings/Spoilers/Contains Note: some not-so-graphic sex; no spoilers
Rating: R
Character/Pairings: Jack/Ianto
Summary: Jack, Ianto, a rainy day, tea, and that which should be obvious.
Rec: I can't get enough of 'Ianto trying to work out what he is to Jack and where their relationship is at' fics and this is a beautifully written, gentle piece about Ianto working through his confusion and doubt and hopes after Jack's return from TYTNW. The characterisations are wonderful, the descriptions just glorious, and the pacing is great. Ianto is awkward and uncomfortable and vulnerable and just perfect. You can't ever go wrong with analineblue, particularly for Ianto-centric fic.

Rec: Affection by miss_bekahrose

Week: Week Ending Sunday 22 May
Author: ms_bekahrose
Title: Affection
Author Warnings/Spoilers/Contains Note: This could be set either post-Meat or post-Exit Wounds.
Rating: PG
Character/Pairings: Jack/Ianto
Summary: af-fec-tion (noun):- a moderate feeling or emotion; tender attachment: fondness.
Rec: This fic is great because it shows a quiet, tender moment between Jack and Ianto. There is so much fic focusing on their sexual relationship or the conflict or angst threaded through their lives, and it's wonderful to read a drabble focusing on a normal, quiet moment where they are just grateful to be alive and together. It's soft and sweet.

Rec: Syphilis, or the Art of Changing Destinies (in Bed)

Week: Week Ending Sunday, May 1st
Author: dottirarinnar
Title: Syphilis, or the Art of Changing Destinies (in Bed)
Author Warnings/Spoilers/Contains Note: none
Rating: PG-13
Character/Pairings: Jack/Ianto, Team

Rec: Filled with the kind of cynical, snappy dialogue that made the show so much fun to watch, dottirarinnar captures the spirit of late series 1 Torchwood brilliantly, with each character having an opportunity to provide dialogue which is undeniably them. Through the simple device of fortune cookies we’re given a well-put-together snapshot featuring the whole team -- we get delivered a moment of sweetness without the sap. In bed.

Rec: making up

Week: Week Ending Sunday 10th April 2011
Author: cold_feets
Title: making up
Author Warnings/Spoilers/Contains Note: None
Rating: PG-13
Words: 350
Characters: Owen + Ianto
Summary: "You deserved it. And I'd do it again." There's no malice behind it, just a simple statement of fact. An attempt to hammer out an understanding between them, even one built on the weakest foundation.

Rec: This brief, memorable ficlet is a wonderfully understated look at Ianto and Owen’s relationship in the aftermath of ‘End of Days’. I like that Ianto doesn’t apologise for his actions, and that he and Owen are both matter-of-fact rather than defensive about their confrontation. The story gently suggests that Owen has a newfound respect for Ianto after being shot by him, and that loss and guilt may be the common denominators that strengthen their understanding of each other.

Rec: Yesterdays

Week: Week Ending Sunday 17th April 2011
Author: nancybrown
Title: Yesterdays
Author Warnings: "mentions of dubious consent, reliance on dubious logic, high woobie factor, creepy!memory!alien, AU (no "Exit Wounds"), very minor spoiler for "Another Life"'.
Spoilers/Contains Note: "Adam", CoE,
Rating: R
Word count: 7,800
Characters/Pairings: Ianto, Adam, Jack, Tosh, Owen, Gwen, Rhiannon, Jack/Ianto, other pairings mentioned.
Summary: Our yesterdays live on in our memories. So does he.

Rec: Adam is one of the episodes I like the least in spite of it's terribly interesting premise. So this sort of follow-up (it's an AU, no Exit Wounds), dealing with one of the problems I had with it ("but what if X remembers....?") is delightful. There's the team and the villain, and characters that were barely touched upon and events hinted at in CoE. Nancybrown also, just like the episode itself, shows how fragile our memories are, and because of that, how fragile we ourselves are. It's a fun and a bit scary story with a nice twist of a solution, and somewhat bitter-sweet end.

Rec: ad interim

Week: Week Ending Sunday 3rd April 2011
Author: beggar_always
Title: ad interim
Author Warnings/Spoilers/Contains Note: Slightly AU. Handjobs in an alley. Spoilers for DW 5x13.
Rating: R
Word count: 3,200
Characters/Pairings: Rory/Jack(/Amy)
Summary: Stuck on the slow path, Rory meets a time traveler.

Rec: The timey-wimeyness of Jack visiting Rory during his two-thousand-year vigil is absolutely delightful. I love how beggar_always paces this, allowing us to see how slowly time moves for Rory and interspersing his periods of loneliness with Jack’s intermittent visits. I especially liked the twisty way in which the plot has Rory meet both Jack-who’s-already-met-Rory-in-the-future and Jack-who-hasn’t-met-Rory-yet. Without falling into the trope of Jack as comic/sexual relief, the story keeps him perfectly in character and creates wonderful chemistry between him and Rory.

Rec: if my heart was a house

Week: Week Ending Sunday 3rd April 2011
Author: xrai_namere
Title: if my heart was a house
Author Warnings/Spoilers/Contains Note: Angst, past torture, PTSD
Rating: NC-17
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto
Summary: Ianto may have said yes to the date but Jack's still not sure where he stands. Post KKBB.

Rec: This is one of the most striking portrayals of post-Year-That-Never-Was Jack I’ve read. xrai_namere takes Jack apart with exquisite precision, letting us see the paranoia and the fear that he’s riddled with. The second-person point of view is used so compellingly that the story makes us fear, with Jack, that Ianto is going to break him just as the Master did. Adding to the complexities of Jack’s post-YTNW trauma is the most spectacular angsty!sex I’ve had the good fortune to read in a long time. Even if not for all this, I’d recommend this one just for its brief, fierce description of how Ianto might have gone down fighting the Toclafane. And to wonderfully balance things out, glimpses of hope shine through the pain.

Rec: Anatomy of Melancholy

Week: Week Ending Sunday, March 20th
Author: rexluscus
Title: Anatomy of Melancholy
Author Warnings/Spoilers/Contains Note: deals with trauma and grief. Companion piece to Dead Letters.
Rating: PG-13
Character/Pairings: Owen, Ianto, Jack
Summary: Post-Cyberwoman. Owen may not have been the best person to be looking after Ianto.

“The Anatomy of Melancholy” treads familiar ground in a way that’s uniquely its own. In the sea of post-Cyberwoman fanfic, it stands out both for its unforgivingly grim tone and its insight into the character of Owen, working his backstory into the fabric of Cyberwoman in a flawlessly written scene. Owen's given understandable motivation and yet always stops just shy of being sympathetic. Couple this with the spot-on characterization and fantastic dialogue, rexluscus delivers a fascinating and memorable read.

Rec: And The Weather Will Hold

Week: Week Ending Sunday 13th March
Author: analineblue
Title: And The Weather Will Hold
Author Warnings/Spoilers/Contains Note: spoilers through Exit Wounds; some language
Rating: PG
Character/Pairings: Ianto; Jack/Ianto
Summary: A post-Exit Wounds weevil hunting expedition gone wrong, an admirable but slightly misguided clean-up effort by Ianto and later, a realization.
Rec: analineblue writes wonderful Ianto introspective fic, and this is one of her best. Set after Exit Wounds, Ianto is still coming to terms with the death of his colleagues when Jack is killed on a Weevil Hunt. This is Ianto shaking apart but holding on by his fingernails. And through it all, he still does his duty. This is a fantastic exploration of Ianto's strength and determination, despite the fact he is at the end of his rope. Jack is written in a beautifully understated way and you can feel his concern and affection for Ianto in every gesture and touch. There is a little gore, the starkness of which is balanced by the almost poetic prose.
